re: resizing images I do this all day long for work and often need the same image converted to various sizes of jpg, bw tif and so on. While Adobe Photoshop isn't a cheap program, if you really are handling a lot of images, it's well-worth it. Photoshop has an applet called Actions which essentially allow you to record a micro and then batch a group of images according to the micro. It doesn't resave the file with a new name (just a new extension if you have altered the format) but the images are saved to either the original location (overwriting the original files) or a predesignated folder (creating new files with the old file names). It sounds complicated, but it's not.
